What are SAMR and SECTIONS?

SAMR and SECTIONS are two models that evaluate the technology or media used in the education field. SAMR represents four levels: Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. Substitution and Augmentation are at the enhancement level. The technology enhances teaching on functional improvement but no actual functional change (Hamilton, Rosenberg, & Akcaoglu, 2016). Modification and Redefinition are at the transformation level where the technology redesigns the teaching task. Educators are encouraged to move from enhancement level to transformation level (Hamilton et al., 2016). SECTIONS model are formed by eight aspects: Students, Ease of Use, Costs, Teaching Functions, Interactions, Organizational Issues, Networking, and Security and Privacy. It is a more detailed assessment framework than the SAMR model, in which the SAMR model emphasizes the extent to which technology affects teaching.

Video Editing activity

Video Editing is crucial to the formation of an effective educational video. A long and boring video is hard for the learners to focus on the teaching content. I edited the screencast video I created in the last blog post and made several changes to the video. The application I used is called OpenShot. First, I reduced redundant pauses in the video to make the video more concise. Then I added connections and fade-in/fade-out effects between clips. Lastly, I add beginning and ending clips to the screencast video. After editing, the video is more effective and easier to transfer knowledge to learners than the original video. It is also more fluent without extra pauses.

Hi Anna, thanks for sharing your points on the Multimedia Evaluation models as well as your edited video! I agree that the edited video is more grabbing and fluid than the original. The increased crispness of the video makes it overall a more helpful video in its goal of showing how Honey works. Video editing from instructional videos to entertainment makes a big difference from pure “watchability” to helpfulness. Again, I do feel like your video has improved to be closer to both!

    Thanks,
    Allen
